Court strikes down attempt to raise naturalization fees

| Oct 9, 2020 | Uncategorized

Becoming a citizen of the United States is a challenging, lengthy and often frustrating process. In addition to the issues some may face when attempting to navigate the naturalization process, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recently attempted to raise fees as well. If passed, the fees would have increased by $500, an increase that would have been unfair and prohibitive to many in Florida and other states seeking citizenship.

A federal judge recently blocked this attempt, bringing a sense of hope to many aspiring citizens. It is also giving others more time who are having difficulty getting fee waiver documents. The court determined the rate increase would have been unfair to low income immigrants and populations. The USCIS stated the fee increase would go toward paying for overhead and shortages in budget.

In the meantime, those hoping to initiate the citizenship process would be wise to do so soon. The temporary injunction means that increased fees could be a reality at some point in the future. Although the reprieve in higher costs may not be permanent, it is providing a sense of hope and urgency to those hoping to complete the process soon. It is especially encouraging for those hoping to complete the naturalization process in time to vote in the upcoming election.

Anyone in Florida hoping to go through the naturalization process will find it beneficial to speak with an experienced attorney as soon as possible. The process of becoming a citizen is not simple, even a simple error can mean more waiting for an applicant. It is crucial to have knowledgeable guidance at every step.
